Twice winner of the Meteor award in the best folk/trad category, John Spillane has toured the country and the world spreading joy with a mix of melodic tunes, entertaining stories and poetic lyrics.
Described as ‘one of the truest Irish voices of his generation’ by Irish music magazine, Spillane truly embodies the Celtic spirit.
Christmas 2009 brought us the follow up to Johns double platinum selling album ‘Irish Songs We Learned at School’ with a new collection ‘More Irish Songs We Learned at School’. This new collection features great Irish musicians Christy Moore and Séan Ó Sé and will get everyone singing the songs of their youth.
Not only that but last year saw Spillane release his first best of album ‘So Far So Good, Like’. This compiled some of his greatest works from the memorable anthems of ‘The Dance of the Cherry Trees’ and ‘Dunnes Stores Girl’ to songs from ‘The Gaelic Hit Factory’ and ‘Irish songs we learned at school’. A fantastic mix of songs, including two new tracks from one of Irelands much loved songwriters.
With 2009 being a stellar year for the man with boundless enthusiasm for his craft its doubtful that 2010 will be much different!
The only thing that’s for sure is that whether from the emotive tunes he whisks you on a journey with or his dynamic playful Cork wit, at the end of a John Spillane show there won’t be a dry eye in the house…
“ … funny, quirky, massively entertaining. John is a story teller, a shanachie.” Dan Regan, Founder, Kansas City Irish Festival.
Nominated for “Cork Man of the Year”
John also was awarded the Irish Music Association (USA) “Top Solo Performer in Concert” award 2009 www.irishmusicassociation.com
“One of the great songwriters to emerge in the last 10 years is John Spillane”
Christy Moore “Other Voices” Feb ‘09
So far this year – Christy Moore has recorded one of John’s songs “Gortatagort” to be on his forthcoming album which Christy performed live on the TV show “Other Voices”
“… some of the most skillfully crafted, vividly realized songs anyone has written in Ireland over the past dozen years.”
Earle Hitchner, premier writer/reviewer for Irish Echo and The Wall Street Journal.

All this along with tours in the U.S., UK and Asia, has enabled the Coronas to establish themselves as one of Irelands’ biggest new bands.

“We’ve worked really hard for the last two years but taking a break never really occurred to us”, says lead singer Danny O’Reilly. “We wanted to continue to build on what we had going and we knew the only way to do that was to go into the studio and record an album that we felt blew Heroes (or Ghosts) out of the water”.

“We were quite young when we recorded Heroes or Ghosts”, concurs guitarist Dave McPhillips (indeed they had all just turned 21). “And, although we were so proud of it, we really didn’t expect it to do as well as it did. The last couple of years on the road, constantly gigging and developing our sound, left us with a better idea of the album we wanted to make”

Indeed anyone who has become accustomed to the Coronas own brand of pop-rock tunes will have plenty of reason to cheer when it comes to their new album, Tony Was An Ex-Con, recorded over 6 weeks in the prestigious Sawmills studio in Cornwall. This time round the guys teamed up with esteemed producer John Cornfield (Muse, Razorlight, Oasis). “Working with John in the mill (Sawmills) was an amazing experience”, says bassist Knoxy. “We thought that, with his resume, he’d be telling us exactly what to do but he was really cool and just let us do our thing. It was a really chilled-out, productive atmosphere.”

The title track comes from an incredible story about the lads on tour in America, involving a psychotic bus driver who left the entire entourage fearing for their lives. “It’s funny looking back at it now, but at the time it was really quite scary”, says drummer Conor Egan. McPhillips: “The song was one of the first new songs that set us off on the writing spree that led to the entire record so it felt like the right title”

In Tony Was An Ex-Con, The Coronas‘ fans will once again be reminded of the endearing spirit that made Heroes or Ghosts a true word-of-mouth success, while many will be impressed by how far they’ve come musically.

“We’re so proud of this record”, says O’Reilly. “We realised along time ago that it’s impossible to try to impress everyone. You can only make music that you believe in yourself – be it pop, rock, indie, rap, whatever. Hopefully the tunes will speak for themselves”

The Coronas new album ‘Tony Was An Ex-Con’ was released in Ireland on Sept. 25th,2009.

The Silent Minute is the new solo project by songwriter John Barrett, former guitarist with the Dublin indie merchants Tenspeedracer. Recorded late last year with just a rhythm section in his Perth home, Barrett has recorded one of the most honest records you are going to hear. Think along the lines of Elliot Smith, Harvest era Neil Young and the simplicity of Bon Iver then you are on the right track. The first notable element of this record is Barrett’s vocal ability to combine raw emotion with the kind of honesty needed to carry an album of this nature. Tracks like ‘Outside a Mirror’ and ‘the Fallen’ let you sit back and just get drawn into the stories being told. ‘She Only Overdosed’ with the lyrics ‘you got to look at the bad side, to know when it’s good’ suggesting the importance of seeing both sides.

The swipe of ‘Jack of Diamonds’ coming in from the early school of Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees) and John Lennon’s Nashville years draws the album closer to a classic finish.

A tale of love, life, loss and a view on a fractured society, Barrett uses his personal experiences as a template for him to tell it as he sees it.

Jodi Martin started writing songs when she was five. Noticing this trend, her Mum loaned her tape recorder. For a five year old child this was a momentous event, and it confirmed Jodi’s obsession with songwriting forever.

Jodi met Kasey Chambers and the Chambers family when she was sixteen. The following year, Kasey recorded Jodi’s song ‘Why’ for the Dead Ringer Band’s album ‘Homefires’ which took out Australia’s premier music awards, winning an ARIA Award for Best Country Album.

Like Kasey, Jodi spent her formative years in the remote desert region of Australia’s Nullarbor Plain. With the recording of ‘Why’, and the Chambers family encouraging her to move to the more populated East Coast, Jodi left her small coastal desert hometown of Ceduna to begin her own career as a singer/songwriter.

Four critically acclaimed albums later, the sparse landscape of her childhood still resonates in Jodi’s music and the legacy of a small town remains in her honest lyrics. Her songs are not afraid to tackle controversial issues, like her own childhood spent growing up in an area with a large indigenous population. Her story comes through in songs like ‘Riddles’ (Water and Wood) where racism is witnessed through a child’s eyes. Jodi writes frankly and incisively about everything from relationships with lovers, parents, to social justice and personal issues like abuse. Jodi strong feelings of connection to place ensure that Australian imagery weaves itself into her work.

Jodi has two major album releases in Australia, ‘Water and Wood’ (2002) and ’15 Minutes Out to Sea’ (2005) out on her own label Hot Bread Records. Her popular live album ’21 Stairs’ and an unofficial debut ‘Sandcastles’ (1997) which to date has been a limited edition release, are also available through HBR.

Jodi’s strength is her live performance and she has toured solidly throughout Australia for the past six years, playing some of her country’s finest venues, both solo and with her band. Jodi has also toured with the likes of Arlo Guthrie (US – 1998 & 2004), Bruce Cockburn (CAN), Eric Bibb (US), The Frames (IRE), Richard Thompson (UK) Joel Plaskett (CAN) and Ember Swift (CAN) and has performed at major Australian festivals including Woodford Folk Festival, East Coast Blues and Roots Festival (BYRON BAY) and Port Fairy Folk Festival.

Jodi is touring Canada from May 2006 with the release of her latest album ’15 Minutes Out to Sea’.

Described as “Power Acoustic” by the Irish Independent.

An attitude of exploration, demonstrated by a childhood spent “digging up stuff in the backyard”, and early years playing in garage punk bands around Sydney Australia, led to a move to Ireland where songs became the obsession. After writing and developing his craft amongst the heavily populated singer-songwriter scene in Dublin, Rory started quietly slipping off to mainland Europe, touring solo acoustic, refining and expanding his repertoire with literally hundreds of gigs and continues to tour regularly both in Australia and Ireland.

Described by one journalist as “a strength that will move and inspire you with jolts of positive energy”, 1998 saw the UK-only release of his debut album and first single ‘NOWHERE SOMEWHERE ANYWHERE’, recorded in Dublin.

Rory’s second album, ‘BLOOD, BONES & SOUL’, was also recorded in Dublin, with Bill Shanley and Ciaran Byrnes sharing production duties at ‘The Cauldron Studios’. An uplifting and energised set of songs featuring the metaphysical imagery of ‘SHED MY SKIN’ and the invigorating ‘RISE ABOVE’. The Irish Times observed that his “relentlessly upbeat folk-rock courses with positive thinking and surges with vigorous musicality….Faithfield is invigorating and inspiring….”

In 2007 Rory Faithfield returned with his third and fundamentally solo acoustic album ‘CIRCLE DANCE’. The intriguing song ‘CLONARD’ opens the album, and to quote the West Australian newspaper: “This is beautiful, straightforward storytelling, saturated in Irish folk traditions but with a keen edge born of Faithfield’s days as a punk rocker in Sydney. I was reminded of Paul Kelly’s more lyrical excursions, which is a high compliment”
